You really don't need to make a will. I'm assuming, since you are young, you don't have any large assets (such as a house) and assuming that you will be leaving her everything in your will anyways, it's a bit redundant (since as your mother, she is your next of kin, assuming you aren't married).

I looked it up, and actually, power-of-attorney has *nothing* to do with death. It's actually voided at death. Power-of-attorney is only if the person it's for (the "principal") is incapacitated or have other issues that they want someone to take care of (financial issues, etc). If someone doesn't have a power-of-attorney set up and then is incapacitated (for example, is in a coma) the doctor's make all the medical choices and parents have no say. Of course, this assumes you are over 18 (maybe 16 in Japan, I'm not sure if they go by your home country or current country of residence). And, of course again, there is very little chance anything at all will happen to you. =)

Although it's probably the right idea to get that sorta stuff sorted, who else would have the power to make a medical decision if I were incapacitated to begin with? apart from the parents if I didn't have the power of attorney. Doctors?

Regardless, I still don't think I'll get it done. I'm stubborn that way. :(

I'm going a power-of-attorney. It's not only for death, but in case you get in an accident and your parents/mother needs to make medical decisions for you.
